Pithoragarh is the easternmost district of Uttarakhand, a place of exquisite natural beauty and serenity, Pithoragarh is popularly known as the 'Little Kashmir'. It is naturally landscaped with high Himalayan mountains, snow-capped peaks, passes & valleys. Pithoragarh town, which is located in Saur Valley with fascinating forests around it, is located at an impressive height of 1,645 m.The geographical area of the district is 7,110 km2The district is administratively divided into six tehsils: Munsiari, Dharchula, Didihat, Berinag, Gangolihat and Pithoragarh. Pithoragarh town is a historical landmark.Pithoragarh was ruled by three generations of Pals, Bam dynasty and Chand dynasty.It was a major center of power during the regime of the Chand Kings in Kumaon.In 1997, part of Pithoragarh district was separated to form the new Champawat district. Kumaoni, with its numerous variations, is the most widely spoken language. Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary,Patal Bhubaneshwar,Narayan Ashram,Munsiari, Khalia Bugyal are the popular tourist places in Pithoragarh District. From here, pilgrims take their journey to the holy shrines, Kailash and Mansarovar.
